Signs your gutters are done
- Pulling away from the fascia. Gutters hanging off the edge of the roof, usually because the fasteners have let go or the wood behind them has rotted.
- Sagging sections that hold water instead of draining to the downspout.
- Leaking seams and corners. Drips at the joints during rain, streaks and stains on the gutter face.
- Rust, holes and splits. Older steel gutters rust through; aluminum splits at stress points.
- Overflow in normal rain. Water sheeting over the front edge, which points to a gutter that is undersized, clogged or pitched the wrong way.
- Water at the foundation. Washed-out mulch, puddles against the house, a damp basement wall on the side where the gutters are failing.
What replacement involves
Old gutters and downspouts come off, the fascia behind them is checked and any rotted wood is dealt with, and new gutters go up, hung with proper fasteners and pitched so water actually runs to the downspouts. Downspouts are placed to carry water away from the foundation, not onto the walkway.
